The Life of George B. Schaller and the Future of Conservation
Field biologist and conservationist George B. Schaller is renowned for
revolutionizing the study of wildlife by observing animals in their
natural habitats. He has also been a powerful advocate for protecting
wilderness and animal species across the globe. Born in 1933 in Berlin
to an American mother and a German father in Berlin, Schaller spent his
war‑torn childhood searching for peace among wild creatures. His efforts
took him around the world to study Congo mountain gorillas, Himalayan
snow leopards, Brazilian jaguars, Tibetan brown bears, and many others.
Before Jane Goodall or Dian Fossey, Schaller revealed the rich emotional
and social lives of these primates and predators.
